Steve Jobs

Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, to Joanne Simpson and Abdulfattah "John" Jandali, two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave their unnamed son up for adoption. His father, Abdulfattah Jandali, was a Syrian political science professor and his mother, Joanne Simpson, worked as a speech therapist. Shortly after Steve was placed for adoption, his biological parents married and had another child, Mona Simpson. It was not until Jobs was 27 that he was able to uncover information on his biological parents.
As an infant, Steven was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs and named Steven Paul Jobs. Clara worked as an accountant and Paul was a Coast Guard veteran and machinist. The family lived in Mountain View within California's Silicon Valley. As a boy, Jobs and his father would work on electronics in the family garage. Paul would show his son how to take apart and reconstruct electronics, a hobby which instilled confidence, tenacity, and mechanical prowess in young Jobs.
While Jobs has always been an intelligent and innovative thinker, his youth was riddled with frustrations over formal schooling. In elementary school he was a prankster whose fourth grade teacher needed to bribe him to study. Jobs tested so well, however, that administrators wanted to skip him ahead to high school—a proposal his parents declined.
After he did enroll in high school, Jobs spent his free time at Hewlett-Packard. It was there that he befriended computer club guru Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was a brilliant computer engineer, and the two developed great respect for one another.

Apple Computers

After high school, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Lacking direction, he dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months dropping in on creative classes. Jobs later recounted how one course in calligraphy developed his love of typography.
In 1974, Jobs took a position as a video game designer with Atari. Several months later he left Atari to find spiritual enlightenment in India, traveling the continent and experimenting with psychedelic drugs. In 1976, when Jobs was just 21, he and Wozniak started Apple Computers. The duo started in the Jobs family garage, and funded their entrepreneurial venture after Jobs sold his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak sold his beloved scientific calculator.
Jobs and Wozniak are credited with revolutionizing the computer industry by democratizing the technology and making the machines smaller, cheaper, intuitive, and accessible to everyday consumers. The two conceived a series of user-friendly personal computers that they initially marketed for $666.66 each. Their first model, the Apple I, earned them $774,000. Three years after the release of their second model, the Apple II, sales increased 700 percent to $139 million dollars. In 1980, Apple Computer became a publically traded company with a market value of $1.2 billion on the very first day of trading. Jobs looked to marketing expert John Scully of Pepsi-Cola to help fill the role of Apple's President.

Departure from Apple

However, the next several products from Apple suffered significant design flaws resulting in recalls and consumer disappointment. IBM suddenly surpassed Apple sales, and Apple had to compete with an IBM/PC dominated business world. In 1984 Apple released the Macintosh, marketing the computer as a piece of a counter culture lifestyle: romantic, youthful, creative. But despite positive sales and performance superior to IBM's PCs, the Macintosh was still not IBM compatible. Scully believed Jobs was hurting Apple, and executives began to phase him out.
In 1985, Jobs resigned as Apple's CEO to begin a new hardware and software company called NeXT, Inc. The following year Jobs purchased an animation company from George Lucas, which later became Pixar Animation Studios. Believing in Pixar's potential, Jobs initially invested $50 million of his own money into the company. Pixar Studios went on to produce wildly popular animation films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Pixar's films have netted $4 billion. The studio merged with Walt Disney in 2006, making Steve Jobs Disney's largest shareholder.

Reinventing Apple

Despite Pixar's success, NeXT, Inc. floundered in its attempts to sell its specialized operating system to mainstream America. Apple eventually bought the company in 1997 for $429 million. That same year, Jobs returned to his post as Apple's CEO.
Much like Steve Jobs instigated Apple's success in the 1970s, he is credited with revitalizing the company in the 1990s. With a new management team, altered stock options, and a self-imposed annual salary of $1 a year, Jobs put Apple back on track. His ingenious products such as the iMac, effective branding campaigns, and stylish designs caught the attention of consumers once again.

Pancreatic Cancer

In 2003, Jobs discovered he had a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare but operable form of pancreatic cancer. Instead of immediately opting for surgery, Jobs chose to alter his pescovegetarian diet while weighing Eastern treatment options. For nine months Jobs postponed surgery, making Apple's board of directors nervous. Executives feared that shareholders would pull their stocks if word got out that their CEO was ill. But in the end, Job's confidentiality took precedence over shareholder disclosure. In 2004, he had a successful surgery to remove the pancreatic tumor. True to form, in subsequent years Jobs disclosed little about his health.

Recent Innovations

Apple introduced such revolutionary products as the Macbook Air, iPod, and iPhone, all of which have dictated the evolution of modern technology. Almost immediately after Apple releases a new product, competitors scramble to produce comparable technologies. In 2007, Apple's quarterly reports were the company's most impressive statistics to date. Stocks were worth a record-breaking $199.99 a share, and the company boasted a staggering $1.58 billion dollar profit, an $18 billion dollar surplus in the bank, and zero debt.
In 2008, iTunes became the second biggest music retailer in America-second only to Wal-Mart. Half of Apple's current revenue comes from iTunes and iPod sales, with 200 million iPods sold and six billion songs downloaded. For these reasons, Apple has been rated No. 1 in America's Most Admired Companies, and No. 1 amongst Fortune 500 companies for returns to shareholders.

Personal Life

Early in 2009, reports circulated about Jobs' weight loss, some predicting his health issues had returned, which included a liver transplant. Jobs had responded to these concerns by stating he was dealing with a hormone imbalance. After nearly a year out of the spotlight, Steve Jobs delivered a keynote address at an invite-only Apple event September 9, 2009.
In respect to his personal life, Steve Jobs remained a private man who rarely discloses information about his family. What is known is Jobs fathered a daughter with girlfriend Chrisann Brennan when he was 23. Jobs denied paternity of his daughter Lisa in court documents, claiming he was sterile. Jobs did not initiate a relationship with his daughter until she was 7 but, when she was a teenager, she came to live with her father.
In the early 1990s, Jobs met Laurene Powell at Stanford business school, where Powell was an MBA student. They married on March 18, 1991, and lived together in Palo Alto, California, with their three children.

Facebook people

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in Dobbs Ferry, New York, into a comfortable, well-educated family. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, ran a dental practice attached to the family's home. His mother, Karen, worked as a psychiatrist before the birth of the couple's four children—Mark, Randi, Donna and Arielle.
Zuckerberg developed an interest in computers at an early age; when he was about 12, he used Atari BASIC to create a messaging program he named "Zucknet." His father used the program in his dental office, so that the receptionist could inform him of a new patient without yelling across the room. The family also used Zucknet to communicate within the house. Together with his friends, he also created computer games just for fun. "I had a bunch of friends who were artists," he said. "They'd come over, draw stuff, and I'd build a game out of it."
To keep up with Mark's burgeoning interest in computers, his parents hired private computer tutor David Newman to come to the house once a week and work with Mark. Newman later told reporters that it was hard to stay ahead of the prodigy, who began taking graduate courses at nearby Mercy College around this same time.
Zuckerberg later studied at Phillips Exeter Academy, an exclusive preparatory school in New Hampshire. There he showed talent in fencing, becoming the captain of the school's team. He also excelled in literature, earning a diploma in classics. Yet Zuckerberg remained fascinated by computers, and continued to work on developing new programs. While still in high school, he created an early version of the music software Pandora, which he called Synapse. Several companies—including AOL and Microsoft—expressed an interest in buying the software, and hiring the teenager before graduation. He declined the offers.

Time at Harvard

After graduating from Exeter in 2002, Zuckerberg enrolled at Harvard University. By his sophomore year at the ivy league institution, he had developed a reputation as the go-to software developer on campus. It was at that time that he built a program called CourseMatch, which helped students choose their classes based on the course selections of other users. He also invented Facemash, which compared the pictures of two students on campus and allowed users to vote on which one was more attractive. The program became wildly popular, but was later shut down by the school administration after it was deemed inappropriate.
Based on the buzz of his previous projects, three of his fellow students—Divya Narendra, and twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss—sought him out to work on an idea for a social networking site they called Harvard Connection. This site was designed to use information from Harvard's student networks in order to create a dating site for the Harvard elite. Zuckerberg agreed to help with the project, but soon dropped out to work on his own social networking site with friends Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin.
Zuckerberg and his friends created a site that allowed users to create their own profiles, upload photos, and communicate with other users. The group ran the site—first called The Facebook—out of a dorm room at Harvard until June 2004. After his sophomore year, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to devote himself to Facebook full time, moving the company to Palo Alto, California. By the end of 2004, Facebook had 1 million users.

The Rise of Facebook

In 2005, Zuckerberg's enterprise received a huge boost from the venture capital firm Accel Partners. Accel invested $12.7 million into the network, which at the time was open only to ivy league students. Zuckerberg's company then granted access to other colleges, high school and international schools, pushing the site's membership to more than 5.5 million users by December 2005. The site then began attracting the interest of other companies, who wanted to advertize with the popular social hub. Not wanting to sell out, Zuckerberg turned down offers from companies such as Yahoo! and MTV Networks. Instead, he focused on expanding the site, opening up his project to outside developers and adding more features.
Zuckerberg seemed to be going nowhere but up, however in 2006, the business mogul faced his first big hurdle. The creators of Harvard Connection claimed that Zuckerberg stole their idea, and insisted the software developer needed to pay for their business losses. Zuckerberg maintained that the ideas were based on two very different types of social networks but, after lawyers searched Zuckerberg's records, incriminating Instant Messages revealed that Zuckerberg may have intentionally stolen the intellectual property of Harvard Connection and offered Facebook users' private information to his friends.
Zuckerberg later apologized for the incriminating messages, saying he regretted them. "If you're going to go on to build a service that is influential and that a lot of people rely on, then you need to be mature, right?" he said in an interview with The New Yorker. "I think I've grown and learned a lot."
Although an initial settlement of $65 million was reached between the two parties, the legal dispute over the matter continued well into 2011, after Narendra and the Winklevosses claimed they were misled in regards to the value of their stock.
Zuckerberg faced yet another personal challenge when the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires, by writer Ben Mezrich, hit stores. Mezrich was heavily criticized for his re-telling of Zuckerberg's story, which used invented scenes, re-imagined dialogue and fictional characters. Regardless of how true-to-life the story was, Mezrich managed to sell the rights of the tale to screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and the critically acclaimed film The Social Network received eight Academy Award nominations.

Bill Gates

William H. Gates III is co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Microsoft Corporation, the world's leading provider of software for personal computers.
Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955. He and his two sisters grew up in Seattle. Their father, William H. Gates II, is a Seattle attorney. Mary Gates, their late mother, was a schoolteacher, University of Washington regent and chairwoman of United Way International.
Gates attended public elementary school before moving on to the private Lakeside School in North Seattle. It was at Lakeside that Gates began his career in personal computer software, programming computers at age 13.
In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, who is now Microsoft's president. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair. BASIC was first developed by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz at Dartmouth College in the mid-1960s. In his junior year, Gates dropped out of Harvard to devote his energies full-time to Microsoft, a company he had started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the personal computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers.
Gates' foresight and vision regarding personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry. Gates is actively involved in key management and strategic decisions at Microsoft, and plays an important role in the technical development of new products. Much of his time is devoted to meeting with customers and staying in contact with Microsoft employees around the world through e-mail.
Under Gates' leadership, Microsoft's mission is continuously to advance and improve software technology, and to make it easier, more cost-effective and more enjoyable for people to use computers. The company is committed to a long-term view, which is reflected in its investment of some $2.6 billion for research and development during the current fiscal year.
In 1995 Gates wrote The Road Ahead, his vision of where information technology will take society. Co-authored by Nathan Myhrvold, Microsoft's chief technology officer, and Peter Rinearson, The Road Aheadheld the No. 1 spot on the New York Times' bestseller list for seven weeks, and remained on the list for a total of 18 weeks. Published in more than 20 countries, the book sold more than 400,000 copies in China alone.
In 1996, while strategically redeploying Microsoft to take advantage of the emerging opportunities created by the Internet, Gates thoroughly revised The Road Ahead to reflect his view that interactive networks are a major milestone in human communication. The paperback second edition also has become a bestseller. Gates is donating his proceeds from the book to a non-profit fund that supports teachers worldwide who are incorporating computers into their classrooms.
In addition to his passion for computers, Gates is interested in biotechnology. He sits on the board of the ICOS Corporation and is a shareholder in Chiroscience Group of the United Kingdom and its wholly owned subsidiary, Chiroscience R&D Inc. (formerly Darwin Molecular) of Bothell, Wash. He also founded Corbis Corporation, which is developing one of the largest resources of visual information in the world - a comprehensive digital archive of art and photography from public and private collections around the globe. Gates also has invested with cellular telephone pioneer Craig McCaw in Teledesic, a company that is working on an ambitious plan to launch hundreds of low-orbit satellites around the Earth to provide a worldwide two-way broadband telecommunications service.
In the dozen years since Microsoft went public, Gates has donated more than $800 million to charities, including $200 million to the Gates Library Foundation to help libraries in North America take advantage of new technologies and the Information Age. In 1994 Gates established the William H. Gates Foundation, which supports a variety of initiatives of particular interest to Gates and his family. The focus of Gates' philanthropy is in four areas: education; world public health and population; non-profit, civic and arts organizations; and Puget Sound-area capital campaigns.
Bill and Melinda French Gates were married on January 1, 1994. They have one child, Jennifer Katharine Gates, who was born in 1996.

West Java Indonesia

Of the 17,000 islands that make up the archipelago of the Republic of Indonesia, Java has historically been considered the heartland. Where Java has led-culturally, economically and politically down through the centuries, other regions have followed. On Java, still the most densely populated island of Indonesia, there are five Provinces. West Java is the largest, with the greatest population, and, some would claim, with the most pride.

West Java Province is located at part of western Java Island. The enchanting of Sunda land stretches from Sunda Strait in the west to the borders of Central Java in the east. The locals' people know West Java Province as the Land of Sunda. The region is primarily mountainous, with rich green valleys hugging lofty volcanic peaks, many of which surround the capital of West Java province. The history of West Java is a story of trade, spices, and the rise and fall of powerful kingdoms. In the late 1500's the region was ruled from mighty Cirebon, which still survives as a sultanate today, although a shadow of its former glory. West Java was of the first contact points in Indonesia for Indian traders and their cultural influences, and it was here that the Dutch and British first set foot in the archipelago.

Bali Indonesia

Bali has the wild forests which stretch on the northern western part of Bali Island. You can see some curious monkeys with their hands stretched out constantly asking for a treat from the guests. There are also lizards who are living in harmony with the humans here, and it is thought to be a good omen if someone could hear the lizard call seven times. There are some Balinese tigers roam the remotest northwest part of the island, although it is a little bit rare to see them directly from their habitats.
Beside that, there will be iguanas, bats, mouse deer, squirrels, civets, barking deer, and more than 300 species of birds in Bali Island. You can also find the schools for dolphins near the area of Padangbai, Lovina, and Candidasa, and there are a lot of corals and small reef fish, sponges, moray eels, plankton, and crustaceans, devouring the whale sharks throughout the east coast of the area named Menjangan Island.
The domestic fauna of Bali Island is equally varied. There are ducks, roosters, chickens, cows, and pigs form the complete picture of a Balinese farm life, because the majority of the local people here work as a farmer.
Although Bali is renowned and famous throughout the world as the place for you to enjoy the sand, surf, and sun, but this island also carries in its folds wilderness of such extreme beauty which only opens up to the knowing travelers. Bali is also exceptional in that it offers its explorers in the national parks here. Bali Barat National Park was first established in order to preserve the amazing forests and the wildlife inside. You can see the tall tropical trees reaching out for the sky, with the variety of wild orchids growing on the branches of the tree.

How to Find a Zip Code

A Brief History of Zip Code

A zip code is a short form for 'Zonal Improvement Plan' code. It is a code assigned to every location or suburb in the USA. It is mandatory that you include the zip code, in the written address when you write a letter or post anything. That is, if you want it to reach the right doorstep. The five digit ZIP code system was introduced by the USPOD (United States Post Office Department) on the 1st of July, 1963. The idea of a ZIP code was the brainchild of a postal employee named Robert Moon. He had submitted his idea for perusal in 1944 when he was working in the field as a postal inspector. After having a look at the dismal performance of the existing postal system, he suggested that if a uniform code system was introduced that labeled every place in USA, mail delivery would be simpler. It took a lot of years for the authorities to appreciate the usefulness and smartness of his practical suggestion which was ultimately brought into reality.

The US postal service even had a mascot of Mr.Zip to promote the use of the zip code. By 1967, the use of zip code had a widespread use, throughout USA. Due to the expansion of cities and towns across USA, eventually more zip codes were needed to adequately label all the new suburbs. Therefore in 1983, the US postal department introduced the ZIP+4 system of code. It added an additional 4 numbers to existing codes. However the additional four numbers added did not really stick. It is not necessary to specify the additional four numbers nowadays. The first five numbers will do along with as detailed an address, you can provide. With machines that use optical character recognition, being employed by the postal department now, this task has become very easy. Because the machine itself sprays the whole zip code on the letter after reading the address.

How To Find A Zip Code

So much so, for zip code history, now lets move on to the intricacies. A zip code of a place is assigned very systematically. The first number denotes a group of states in the USA. The next number selects a particular city or region in those states. Every next number uptill the last one narrows down the address to a city, then a suburb and ultimately to a city block. So the zip code is really a cryptic way of writing an address!

There are sites on the net that can find the zip code for you. The United states post office homepage, has a facility that gives you the zip code of a particular area, if you supply the address in an online entry form provided by them. This can provide you with a zip code in a fraction of a second. There are many private sites with zip code finder, that can do the same for you, if you just google it!

User Testing Website design

User Testing from the start or launch of a product has proved to be very important. Many organizations swear by it as a kind of a do or die method which can result in the success or failure of the product.

Now you may not be familiar with User Testing or Usability Testing whichever you prefer, but its a method of evaluating a products features and functionality, with the ultimately goal of finding out if the product has met its intended purpose in 'real world' conditions.

User Testing can be carried out on a wide variety of industries such as retailers, e-commerce, web applications and intranets. Its allows for quick user responses and the changes recommended from the feedback can often implemented quickly.

As a web designer I have seen those that do invest in Usability Testing do so mostly when the project in still in its infancy, but sure enough has launched.

As web designers though our goal is to create a great unforgettable experience to our users.

Isn't it?

Well it probably should be and I think Usability should be employed more in the website development phase more, the findings from a Testing User report can reveal the flaws which can come back to haunt us later. Cross browser compatibility, navigational functionality and the correct functioning of submissions and forms are all questions asked.

Its no surprise that e-commerce websites are now starting to invest in User Testing as standard. Its why this method of Testing your users is becoming such a success story.

A way to have all those questions about design and performance answered. It can be incorporated as a part of the design process as it can be then be monitored throughout. So with the areas for concern reported from your Usability data, you as a web designer can then say you got as close to a perfect site as possible.

So what are the key goals?

Firstly performance. For example a Testing User report could ask what was the time spent to complete a simple task like an enquiry form.

Memorability. So apart from recording how many of your users would return, User experience testing can also find out if any have visited the site before and if so, how long ago?

Mistakes. If mistakes are made how frequent were they? How easy were they to recover from? Did the user feel like they may have needed assistance?

User Satisfaction & Interaction. Now this is great because User Testing can give us the insight of where the User interacted on the page. What got his or hers attention? Which areas did he stay away from? Was it difficult to navigate? Most importantly did the site live up to his expectations?

So as I mentioned earlier I believe as a web designer the best Usability results are gained when Usability is incorporated early in the product development life cycle and I think that's true for all websites from e-commerce to reference.

You can still though get comprehensive feedback at any stage in the web development process.

Pre development. Where users can test on a prototype of the website before site launch. Be careful though if done here the site must be a true reflection still of what the working site will look like, at the very least though the Testing participants must be able to work it.

During Development where users can identify key areas for concern, the feedback given here could also be positive about the design of your site. This is when most people bring User Testing in on their projects but it can save a massive amount of time and effort for your design & development team.

Post Development is increasing with small business owners, where the users role becomes more focussed on asking themselves if the product has met its intended purpose. Businesses probably get the most amount of data back at this stage but as a general rule the design changes can be more difficult to implement at this stage.

Usability Testing is now much more affordable than it was a year or two ago.

Thanks in large part to new remote methods like video testing and Usability surveys it is now being used by more an more businesses as a health check for their web presence. I mean if you have even a small client base or small product range you can now connect with your users to find out if your product or service is meeting their expectations.

Its not market research though. User Testing has a more wider application because rather than just gaining ideas and opinions, it gains insight. Real users using your products in the real world.

Yes its true Usability in general has started to attract more attention these days. Were living in a time when its never been more important to stay ahead of the competition. As business people we know any gains we make can often only be temporary if not closely monitored and its definitely true that we don't live some bubble where our products or services are immune from competition.

As someone who used User Testing in 70% of my web design work I would say I am converted as I truly believe that after having worked with a very talented team the best team in the world can only get you halfway there. If your goal as a web designer is to produce bespoke websites that meet the user expectations completely then its Usability Testing you need.
